Introducing Pakistan

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan was born on 14 August 1947, on the night when British rule of the sub-continent came to an historic end. Today, the nation plays a vital role in both regional and international relations.

Our flag represents the muslim majority (green) and the non-muslim minorities (white) who make up the nation.

Pakistan becomes an independent nation: hear the speech of Mr Mohammed Ali Jinnah-known to us as Quaid-e-Azam: Quick Time Movie

Our national language, Urdu, is written with the Persian script and is a beautiful, poetic, rhythmic tongue, with origins in the courts of the Moghul rulers of the last five hundred years. We also speak English and our diaspora is worldwide.

Our land and people support a population of over 162,000,000 people, of whom 50% are under 15 years old. Our people are welcoming but private. We create large extended families to provide nurture and care for multiple generations. We are generous and hospitable. Throughout our history, right up until the present day, we have offered shelter to millions of refugees from other nations.

We are a nation of great diversity and our peoples have lived together for many centuries. Amongst our many tribes, Pathans live in the north west, Punjabis in the east, Sindis in the south east and Baloch in the south west. The northern areas are mountainous and support a diversity of tribes and clans each with their own traditions. Our people speak a total of 72 languages! Languages of Pakistan.

In modern days, we are now an urbanised population with the largest city of our land, Karachi, now boasting 14.1 million people and counted as number 15 amongst the 'megacities' of the world. National Demographics.

Recently our nation has embarked upon a period of rapid economic growth, but the challenge to educate and train our people to live fulfilling lives remains. Over one third of our people live below the poverty line. YWAM Pakistan is committed to playing our part in giving them a better future for the next generation.

Listen to a modern national song:

'Voice of Freedom' by Sarah Francis, was first sung at the Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Pakistan High Commission, 2001 and then in the Islamabad Club and the bi-centennial celebrations of the North West Frontier province at the Qayyum Stadium, April 2002.

Voice of Freedom contains the actual voice of Qaid-e-Azam, with lyrics developing the theme, Unity, Faith, Discipline.
